Google Ads vs SEO: Which Is Better for a Small Business Budget?
Michael Reid6 min read
It’s one of the most common questions we hear: “Should I spend my marketing budget on Google Ads or SEO?” Both put you in front of people searching for what you sell — but they work very differently.
Google Ads: fast and controllable
Pros
- Results from day one.
- Full control over budget, keywords and locations.
- Easy to test offers and messaging.
Cons
- Traffic stops the moment you stop paying.
- Costs can be high in competitive industries.
- Needs ongoing management to avoid wasted spend.
SEO: slower, but compounding
Pros
- No cost per click — traffic keeps coming.
- Builds long-term trust and authority.
- Usually the lowest cost per lead over time.
Cons
- Typically 3–6 months before meaningful results.
- Requires consistent investment in content and links.
So which should you choose?
For most small businesses the answer is both, in stages:
- Start with Google Ads to generate leads immediately and learn which keywords convert.
- Invest in SEO at the same time, prioritising the keywords proven profitable by your ads.
- Shift budget gradually from ads to SEO as your organic rankings grow.
If your budget only stretches to one, choose ads when you need leads this month, and SEO when you can play the longer game.
